Internet Plagiarism Plagiarism used to be easy to catch. It always took real work for a student to try to pass off someone else’s work as his or her own. Different sources of plagiarizing included copying texts from the library and buying old papers off of other students. There were not many resources to choose from where a student’s topic was contained. That has now changed. There is a little thing called the Internet. It has revolutionized the plagiarism world and made it a little more difficult for educators to catch plagiarism culprits. There are some tools out now, however, that are aiding this new battle. Since the Internet came along plagiarism has become a lot easier to accomplish; at least for the time being. What†¦show more content†¦It is also best to include a partial citation in the text such as â€Å"Anderson says†¦Ã¢â‚¬  or â€Å"According to Osborn†¦Ã¢â‚¬  The third and final way to plagiarize is not citing others’ ideas. An author’s ideas that help a writer to form an opinion or view should be given credit in a proper citation. [2] When plagiarism occurs and is caught with sufficient evidence, the results can be disastrous to a student’s career. The punishment can be minor where the student fails that assignment or maybe even the whole course. In extreme cases, suspension or expulsion from the school or University is the punishment. [3] What are the signs that warn educators that plagiarism has occurred in a paper? First, look for context changes. Students will often take a paragraph or two from various sources and try to change a few words around to pass it off as their own. A lot of those times a few context changes will appear from words that were missed when being moved and changed around. An example for this would be a paper about England with references to Ireland websites. Another detection is missing footnotes. Students often do this when they want to act like they do not know how to cite. This way, ignorance can be claimed when the missing footnote is pointed out. To check this, an educator should ask about the source and see if the student remembers what the source was about.
